Cultures collide!

An amazing wedding a couple of weekends ago! My very good friends, one of whom is Vietnamese and another of whom is Danish, both of whom are Canadian, got married and brought together friends from across BC and family from around the world!

An event like this reminds me of universal constants...just how much difference a smile can make, and how everyone, no matter where they're from, really just wants to dance, smile and be hugged. I see a bit of a paradox at events like this as well though, we seem to 'long to belong', that is, most of us strive to belong with one or more groups of people, but in creating meaningful relationships and a genuine sense of belonging we put up rules and standards that must be met. Culture and tradition enter into the equation here. What's interesting is as cultures intermingle more and more, and different people from different places interact, cultures have to re-adjust and change the rules of belonging so that we can still...belong...

But we need to use traditions and cultures as a focal point to belong! That's where I think cultural traditions that can accommodate varying beliefs and people of different backgrounds have the greatest value and strength, and will have the greatest lasting value. So from that sense a wedding - whereby two people who love each other go up in front of their peers to exchange vows - will likely be one of the most valued traditions and a timeless opportunity to get people together to share with each other and belong.
